an annex of the 8 museum
the porto annex
41°09′N — where the Camino Portugués begins
An annex of The 8 Museum is a city in which encounters have occurred. Unlike the annexes of other institutions, it holds no building, employs no staff, and has acquired nothing. Its collection is held on indefinite loan from the world and remains installed where it was found — on granite, azulejo, enamel, bronze and embroidered thread — maintained, without their knowledge, by the residents, the weather, and the municipal services of the city itself.
The Porto Annex was established on 2 October 2026. Its first work was met on the night of arrival, at 23:52 on 1 October; the statutory eighth followed at 10:37 the next morning, and by evening the register held fifty-five works in Porto and eleven across the Douro in Vila Nova de Gaia, which the committee admits to the annex, the Douro being regarded as a feature of the premises rather than a boundary. It is the museum's fiftieth annex. The expedition planning laboratory has long carried a green flag here, Porto being where the Camino Portugués begins; the committee notes that the flag has been overtaken by a building. Each of the annex's works was photographed in situ, untouched, under existing conditions, and left exactly as it was. Visitors to Porto are advised that the collection remains on public display. Every work was last verified on the day of its encounter; what the weather, the council, and the ordinary attrition of the world have since done to them, the museum does not undertake to know. The register records the encounter, not the object; an encounter, once entered, is beyond the reach of the weather.
