the greens

Green is the colour the museum keeps looking for. This room begins with works whose dominant colour falls within green as the committee has now fixed it: from 60°, where green has finished arguing with yellow, to 189°, the last degree before it conceded to cyan. Both boundaries were arrived at properly — the museum first overshot at each end on purpose, hung the results, and looked at them. The lime end went first; the cyan end followed. The degrees are marked below, and the ruling is now the museum's.

Dominant colour is fixed for every work as the accession committee admits it, and the count above is taken afresh from the register at each sitting, with a small number of curatorial exclusions where a photograph passes the colour measure but does not read as green. Those encounters remain in the museum; they are simply shown elsewhere. The committee notes that the true greens — the middle of this room — are the rarest holdings in it, and that the museum has never once gone looking for a colour on purpose. How green compares with the other colours is a matter for the colour census.
