In the matter of airports: asked whether an airport is a city (Oslo), the committee declined to rule and requested that no one ask. Asked subsequently whether an airport can be a country (Warsaw-Chopin, holding the whole of Poland), the committee turned off the lights. Informed that its largest holding in the eighth degree east stands airside at Milan-Malpensa, the committee requested that the eighth degree, of all places, not do this to it.

In the matter of the westernmost annex: the title was awarded to Lisbon, the committee having reasoned that beyond it lay only the Atlantic, and the Atlantic had produced no encounters. The paperwork of Vancouver corrected the geography; Gabriola Island corrected it again within five days. The committee, twice corrected on this axis and thrice on the other, commissioned a globe.

In the matter of the easternmost annex: awarded to Brisbane — the first ‑most to be decided using the new globe, and it is hoped the last to require it.

In the matter of the northernmost annex: the title passed from Tromsø to Longyearbyen to Ny-Ålesund in the course of a single July, the archipelago appearing determined to test the committee's definitions. The committee upheld the final claim, declared its appetite for the question exhausted, and has since retired from the region's superlative economy entirely — a retirement it maintains even against Hammerfest, which advertises. The matter is closed. The committee has asked that the word final be minuted.

In the matter of the lowest-lying annex: held for a season by the Maldives, nowhere more than a few metres above the sea. Reviewing elevations in the course of other business, the committee awarded the title to Rotterdam ex officio, ruling that an annex partly beneath the sea outranks one merely close to it. Rotterdam accepted without ceremony and cycled on.

In the matter of the composite 8 of 28 January 2024, eighty-five stickers reading 85, arranged into a single numeral by the staff of a café at a basement service entrance in Sydney, for reasons of their own and with no knowledge of the museum, which did not yet exist in any form they could have known about: from a distance a real 8; up close, eighty-five small violations of axiom 4. Admitted under the historical conditions then prevailing, the axioms not yet having been written down and the committee not yet having been convened to object. The committee has since looked at it from a distance and finds this satisfactory.

In the matter of Amber’s hands (12 June 2024), an 8 formed by a friend’s fingers, deliberately, for the practitioner, in full knowledge of the project, and photographed at the friend’s insistence: admitted. The axiom in force at the time said only that the practitioner could not make an 8, and that it must exist in the world; the hands were in the world, and not the practitioner’s. The committee accessioned the work, felt strange about it, and adjourned without saying why.

In the matter of the eight-ball at South Grafton (24 January 2025, 13:09), held up to the camera by a friend, at the practitioner’s request and against the friend’s better judgement, in front of her own schooner of beer: admitted, the ball being in the world and the hand not the practitioner’s. The committee, feeling the same strangeness twice in seven months, was this time able to name it, and amended the axiom to read nor made for the practitioner, which is how axiom 9 has read since. Both works stay; the axiom was written for the ones that would follow. The committee notes that this is the only rule in the museum to have been drafted by the two things it would have excluded, asks that neither Amber nor the friend take it personally, and records, for accuracy, that the ball was never in the glass.

In the matter of the proto-8 of Chermsideøya, authored by moss and algae and admittedly incomplete: the committee, mindful of the latitude and of a growing season measured in weeks, ruled that nature made a valiant effort and that allowances would be made.

In the matter of green. That green warranted a room of its own has been the settled view of the committee for longer than these minutes record. The room having now been opened, the committee declines to revisit a question it does not regard as ever having been open, and has since fixed the boundaries of green by ruling. Having hung the doubtful degrees at either end and looked at them, the committee finds that green begins at 60°, the lime end below it reading as yellow, and ends at 189°, beyond which it concedes to cyan. The ruling is entered as the museum’s own and binds no one else.

In the matter of the crêpe (Paris), folded into a passable 8 by the practitioner's own hand: struck from the record under the axioms — a made 8, however accomplished, is not a found one. The committee thanks the practitioner for volunteering the confession, and has asked that breakfast remain distinct from fieldwork in future. This constitutes the museum's first formal deaccession.

In the matter of Fontainebleau, an 8 encountered on the practitioner's own watch, at ten kilometres' altitude, while overflying a business school of personal significance: the committee ruled that French airspace is France, that its definitions say nothing about altitude, and that it declines to correct the omission retroactively. It wishes it recorded that it regards the submission as being in poor taste — noting, for consistency with the crêpe, that poor taste is not fabrication, and only one of the two is grounds for deaccession. The nostalgia is acknowledged, and was not accessioned.

In the matter of the colour of the eight-thousand-eight-hundred-and-eighty-eighth work: discussion is understood to have taken place in the corridor, in lowered voices, though no member recalls being present. A proposal that accessions be suspended save for 8s that are green and rather good — thereby ensuring that the completing work be very pretty — was heard with more sympathy than anyone will now confirm, and struck under the axioms, which value every surface equally and extend no special courtesy to beauty. The committee reminds all parties that the 8,888th work will be the 8,888th thing found, exactly as the first was the first. It confesses to no preference. The corridor confesses to green.

In the matter of the practitioner’s field notes of this morning, each encounter documented at unusual length and from several angles, in anticipation that any one of them may prove to have been the 8,888th: the diligence is noted. No connection to any forthcoming figure has been suggested. The committee did not suggest one.

In the matter of the eight-thousand-eight-hundred-and-eighty-eighth work, being a price on a shop window at Kalamaria, 08:22, hand-lettered in green vinyl and preceded by the tip of an arrow such that the work reads greater than eight: the register is complete for the length of one work. The committee notes that the work is green. The committee notes that it confessed to no preference. The corridor has been asked to stop smiling.

In the matter of the poems, two hundred and eighty-seven captions from the practitioner’s public account having been matched to their works by capture time and by the features of the photographs themselves, and entered in the register the same afternoon: the committee, which had not known the register could carry poems, finds that it now does, and that several of them are about it.

In the matter of a second view of the Figareto plank (Perama, 07:18, 21 August), admitted on the evening of completion as a corrected crop and found within the hour to duplicate a close crop already held: struck under axiom 6 the same evening. The committee records that the earlier, wider crop had itself been a duplicate, that it had been counted, and that the count of eight thousand eight hundred and eighty-eight had therefore rested, without anyone’s knowledge, on a work that should not have been there. It records this calmly. Its calm is minuted again.

In the matter of the pencil (Corfu, 21 August, 12:43): a life drawing of the practitioner’s teacher, made in a lesson that morning, was found on review to contain an 8 just beneath the sitter’s left breast — a region of the drawing the committee notes received particular attention — which the practitioner did not set out to draw and noticed only once it was there, and remarked upon to the sitter at the time. Admitted under axiom 9 as an exception, on a test the committee now states for the record: the practitioner caused the 8, did not intend it, and was surprised by it. The committee distinguishes this from the crêpe, which was intended, and from Amber’s hands, which were intended for the practitioner. It cites as precedent a plush octopus at Hydra (28 November 2025) onto whose head the practitioner’s own hairtie fell, bounced, settled as an 8 and stayed, and notes that the precedent is named Octavia. The committee records the practitioner’s account that the pencil was, by that stage of the lesson, drawing by itself. It records the account without endorsing it. It observes that the admission restores the register to eight thousand eight hundred and eighty-eight works at the moment of completion, with the green window still the eight-thousand-eight-hundred-and-eighty-eighth, and that this was the practitioner’s wish. It has decided not to examine whether the wish preceded the finding. The work’s own caption says the rest, and the committee has let it.

In the matter of the four (4) golden foil balloons, and of four (4) candles, also golden, also 8, the latter acquired with visible discomfort at a counter where the purchase of four identical birthday numerals seemed, to the practitioner, the odd thing in the transaction: the committee is now told what they were for. It points out, gently, that a person who has spent thirty months photographing the number eight eight thousand eight hundred and eighty-eight times is not well placed to find four candles odd. It has asked that the balloons be deflated with dignity. The candles remain unlit, a slice of passionfruit cheesecake having been acquired for the purpose the previous day and remaining, at the time of minuting, in the refrigerator, uneaten. The committee has not asked why. It has asked for a fork.

In the matter of the Sydney Annex having reached eight hundred and eighty-eight works (11 July 2025, 08:51, at Ingleside): the figure was crossed on a Friday morning on the northern beaches and came to the committee’s attention fourteen months later, in the course of other business. The committee has considered whether an annex of that size is something other than an annex, and has ruled that it is an annex. It notes that the museum does not grade its holdings by weight, that the eight hundred and eighty-eighth work in Sydney was found exactly as the first was, and that the statutes contain no word for a city that has done well. It has declined to coin one. The retrospective minute is entered without ceremony, the ceremony having been missed at the time, and the committee does not propose to hold it now.

In the matter of the largest annex in Europe: held by Milan from 24 August 2024, without challenge and, so far as the committee is aware, without Milan’s knowledge of the fact. Passed on 5 September 2026 to Thessaloniki, an annex three days old, which had already taken Greece from Corfu on the day of its founding and appears not to have stopped for the paperwork. The committee notes that the news reached it in airport codes — SKG over MXP — and refers the practitioner to the first sitting’s ruling on airports, which it does not intend to reopen. Milan’s disappointment is assumed rather than recorded; the city has not written. The committee observes that Milan remains the museum’s most typographically confident annex, a title no register can move, and that Thessaloniki was, at the time of entry, still growing. The minute is accordingly entered in pencil.

In the matter of Corfu, being an island, and not a small one: the committee, asked whether an annex may be an island, observes that it has already allowed a pilgrimage way, an archipelago, a company settlement and a city-state, and that the statutes’ word city has by now been stretched over most things a person can walk across in a fortnight. It rules that the island is the annex. Every encounter on Corfu belongs to the Corfu Annex, from Acharavi to the Kanali road, whatever the register’s geocoder chooses to call the nearest village that morning; the seventeen works at Kanali, carried for a season as paperwork pending, were never pending anything. The committee declines to rule on Paxos, Othonoi, Ereikoussa or Mathraki, none of which has produced an encounter, and asks not to be asked until one does. The matter rests.

In the matter of the Aegean coast of Türkiye, being a holding the museum did not have: the field-station essay recorded four Turkish works, one of them coastal. The register records three, all airside at Istanbul, and no coastal work at all — the practitioner’s Turkish holdings being entirely the product of transit between China and Athens. The committee finds the fourth was a Greek one, from the December walk at Mytilini or the water north-east of Chios that evening, carried across a strait narrow enough to see over and given to the wrong country. It has been struck, with the rest of Türkiye, from the essay. The committee notes that the error was found not by remembering but by counting.

In the matter of the other 8,888: the practitioner, inspecting the neighbouring works in the special exhibition, observed that the works exhibited “before” and “after” it had been photographed after and before it. Investigation established that the album from which the day’s photographs were received supplied the newest first, that the intake preserved this order, and that the register sorted by date without sorting within the day. The committee notes that the clock was not running backwards. The paperwork was.

On the alternative counting: holding the admitted collection fixed and ordering the milestone batch by original capture timestamps, position 8,888 would fall to 8M·9991d0b6, photographed at 07:53 on the morning of 2 September 2026: graffiti on an electricity box in Kalamaria. The calculation was checked against the fifty-one photographs of the original intake and against every photograph now recorded for the day. The committee admits the finding to the record, and its context photograph as a field record, not an accession.

On the historical milestone: 8M·b6cc50df, the shop-window 8, retains its designation as the work that marked completion of the first collection as the register then stood. That designation is not a claim of exact capture chronology. Existing register positions are preserved; the electricity-box work is exhibited beside it, as “the other 8,888”. The committee declines to correct history by pretending that its correction happened first.

On future intakes: from 23 September 2026 the committee will sit each morning’s arrivals in the order of their capture before entering them in the register, one delivery constituting a sitting’s business. Where the hour is known it is used, and its offset with it; where it is not, the work is marked as such. A photograph arriving late is entered after those already admitted, whatever its date. The committee’s procedures were amended on 22 September, in time for the following morning. The album from which arrivals are collected continues to present its newest first, that being how new arrivals are noticed.

On the shop and the letter: the shop remains in business, and the practitioner has drafted, but has not yet sent, a letter informing it of the window’s place in the museum. The committee would receive any reply as documentation. No response is presumed. The possibility of a fruitful correspondence is not the reason for retaining the milestone; its historical designation is.
