the eighth degree

a research programme of the 8 museum

Four lines circle the earth in the museum's own name: the eighth degree of latitude north and south, and the eighth degree of longitude east and west. The museum maintains a standing research interest in the 8s encountered within these degrees — whether they differ in character, in material, in bearing, from 8s found at less committed coordinates — and intends to visit more of them. The hypothesis is untested. The fieldwork is the point.

the four eighth degrees, with the museum's current holdings in gold and its prospects hollow

current holdings within the eighth degree

comporta — 8°W

38°22′N, 8°47′W · 18 works · 30 may – 1 june 2025

The museum's largest deliberate residence in the eighth degree: three days among the rice fields and pine of the Alentejo coast. The works are sun-bleached, hand-painted, and unhurried, and the museum has provisionally recorded a certain horizontality in their bearing, pending peer review.

zürich — 8°E

47°23′N, 8°32′E · 5 works · one afternoon, 8 september 2025

The entire Swiss national collection resides in the eighth degree east — the only national holding so housed, a fact the museum records with quiet satisfaction and the Swiss, presumably, with none, precision being unremarkable to them.

malpensa — 8°E

45°38′N, 8°43′E · 22 works · in transit

The museum's largest holding in the eighth degree east is, regrettably, an airport. Twenty-two works stand airside at Milan-Malpensa, photographed across repeated departures. The nomenclature committee has been informed and has requested that the eighth degree, of all places, not do this to it.

the eighth parallels — vacant

8°N and 8°S · no works

No work in the collection has yet been encountered in the eighth degree of latitude, north or south. The nearest approach stands at 9°01′N, on the Thai gulf coast, some hundred and twelve kilometres short. The museum regards the two parallels as its most conspicuous vacancy, and the most honest reason it owns a suitcase.

prospects

The eighth parallel north passes through Kanyakumari and Thiruvananthapuram, Freetown, and Panama City; the south through Bali, Recife, and Trujillo. The eighth meridian west holds Porto, Cork, and Marrakesh; the east, Genoa. Fieldwork is contemplated in no particular order and with no particular deadline; the degrees are not going anywhere, and neither, in the long run, is the museum.
