the zürich annex

An annex of The 8 Museum is a city in which encounters have occurred. Unlike the annexes of other institutions, it holds no building, employs no staff, and has acquired nothing. Its collection remains permanently installed where it was found — on machined steel, enamel plates, hydrant markers, survey paint, and the route 8 tram — and is maintained, without their knowledge, by the residents, the weather, and the municipal services of the city itself.

The Zürich Annex was established on 8 September 2025, and its entire collection of eighty-six works was acquired that same day — the eighth of the ninth, a date the committee has examined for signs of intent and declined to rule on. The annex is the first to reside within the eighth degree: the whole of Zürich sits at 8°E, so every work carries the meridian in its coordinates, and the museum's standing research programme in that band of the earth, previously administered from a rice coast and, regrettably, an airport, now possesses a resident institution. Nearly the entire Swiss national collection is housed here, at a precision the museum finds characteristic of the premises: the works were encountered at a rate of one every few minutes across a single afternoon, filed themselves in order, and have required no attention since. Each of the annex's works was photographed in situ, untouched, under existing conditions, and left exactly as it was. Visitors to Zürich are advised that the entire collection remains on public display.
