An annex of The 8 Museum is a city in which encounters have occurred. Unlike the annexes of other institutions, it holds no building, employs no staff, and has acquired nothing. Its collection is held on indefinite loan from the world and remains installed where it was found — on blue-and-white azulejo, spray paint, a padlock, lace curtain, and hand-drawn ink — maintained, without their knowledge, by the residents, the weather, and the municipal services of the city itself.

The Alcácer do Sal Annex was established in the first days of August 2026, and the committee was some weeks in noticing what it had done: the town lies at 8°31′ west, inside the eighth degree, which makes it the museum's second annex resident there after Zürich and its first in the western hemisphere. The research programme, which had been content with Comporta's scattered holdings down the coast, now has a town. One hundred and three works were accessioned in three days, sixty-two of them on the third, when the heat broke. Each of the annex's works was photographed in situ, untouched, under existing conditions, and left exactly as it was. Visitors to Alcácer do Sal are advised that the collection remains on public display, and that the eighth degree is not signposted. Every work was last verified on the day of its encounter; what the weather, the council, and the ordinary attrition of the world have since done to them, the museum does not undertake to know. The register records the encounter, not the object; an encounter, once entered, is beyond the reach of the weather.
